The value of general aviation became apparent during the heavy rains of January 2002. The only access to Happy Camp for almost a week was by air. The phone and power companies flew repair crews and supplies in to begin restoring lines. The Road Department and USFS flew various roads to determine the extent of the damage. Food and medical supplies were airlifted and a number of people were flown to hospitals with medical emergencies. Almost every week, local Trinity County pilots offer their time, service, and planes to neighbors who need efficient transportation to Redding, Sacramento, or the Bay Area for medical treatment. Often, patients need daily radiation treatments for a four to six week period. The short 20-minute flight to Redding helps ease their stress.

Local airports are also used for:

• Fire fighting equipment staging
• Emergency medical air lifts to distant hospitals
• Quick police access to remote area
